Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Correctional Officer to join our team at the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. As a Correctional Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of offenders, staff, and visitors within our institution. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol facilities and make security checks to ensure the safety and security of offenders, staff, and visitors.
  • Search individuals, vehicles, packages, mail, equipment, clothing, and offender quarters for contraband items.
  • Escort offenders, visitors, and staff inside and outside of the institution and verify possession of appropriate passes or legal documents.
  • Interact with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone, providing information, security, and assistance.
  • Observe offender behavior and interaction with staff, other offenders, and visitors, communicating observations to supervisory and program staff to ensure effective security and consistent application of offender change principles.
  • Continuously interact with offenders, assisting in the development of problem-solving skills, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures when necessary and as authorized by law or policy.
  • Maintain logs, prepare reports, and enter information into the DOC electronic offender record system.
  • Supervise offender work assignments and evaluate work performance.
  • Operate electronic doors, telephone systems, two-way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed-circuit TV systems, computer terminals, and use weapons/offender control devices.
  • Attend training classes and seminars, and may train or serve as team leader for other staff.
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
  • Ability to pass psychological tests, background investigation check, post-offer health screen, urinalysis screen for drugs, and all new employee training during the probationary period.
  • Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain a Commercial Driver's License and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
