Stormwater Superintendent

Job Summary:

New Hanover County, NC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Stormwater Superintendent to join our team in the Stormwater Services Division of the Engineering Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for supervising staff and overseeing the daily operations of our stormwater construction crews.

Key Responsibilities:

• Supervise and Manage Staff: Supervise two or more full-time staff by prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff is trained, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
• Oversee Stormwater Maintenance Crews: Oversees and schedules work of the stormwater maintenance crews including managing the assignment of vehicles and equipment for individual projects, jobs, and tasks.
• Implement Safety Measures: Oversees the department's policies related to maintenance performance measures related to safety, proper use and care of the County's resources, proper care of work sites, and conduct related to performance of work.
• Coordinate with Vendors: Coordinates with vendors to obtain quotes for supplies, equipment, vehicles, and tools and to schedule delivery of ordered materials to ensure staff is available to receive or pick up shipments and to aid in scheduling work if materials are needed for particular jobs.
• Manage Fleet and Equipment: Manages the department's fleet of heavy trucks, trailers, and equipment.
• Train and Develop Staff: Schedules, manages, and conducts training related to the use of heavy construction equipment, construction methods, and standard operation procedures.
• Perform Other Duties: Performs other duties of a similar nature or level, including performing maintenance or repair of drainage infrastructure or construction of new drainage infrastructure.

Requirements:

• Education: High school diploma and eight (8) years of progressively responsible related experience, including a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
• Skills: Knowledge of supervisory principles, civil construction methods, processes, and techniques, general maintenance techniques related to construction and heavy equipment, techniques for troubleshooting hand and power tools, basic mechanical concepts, budgetary and accounting concepts, techniques for safe operation of heavy equipment and cleaning materials.
• Licenses/Certifications: Valid NC Driver's License, NC Class A Commercial Driver's License (required within 6 months of employment).
