About the Role

Schuff Steel is seeking a skilled Fitter to join our team of professionals in building structures and bridges. As a Fitter, you will play a critical role in assembling and fitting drawing dimensions of various structural, plate, and mechanical materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders, and interpret blueprints and plans to plan the fitting operation.
  • Direct and assist in handling and spreading of material, assembling material into required relationships according to detail drawings.
  • Lay out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material when required, and check, square, and scribe all detail connections.
  • Responsible for work conforming to drawings and notes thereon, and clean up material by grinding or chipping.
  • Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes, burns, copes, and bevels, and straightens material, and performs minor layout.
  • Spot paints for identification marks, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Perform other routine duties per management direction, and adhere to and follow all safety rules and PPE requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and/or 12 months experience.
  • Must pass fitter test.
  • Equipment Knowledge & Skills – variety of hand tools and equipment.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
