About the Job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Headquarters, Air Force Reserve Command team as an Airplane Pilot. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing pilot and pilot in command duties in assigned aircraft, as well as a variety of administrative duties related to flight and mission accomplishment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and interpret unit goals, mission, metrics, policies, and objectives to ensure the unit meets or exceeds readiness requirements.
  • Perform pilot and pilot in command duties in assigned aircraft and provide a full range of ground and airborne flight instruction to Reservists, instructors, flight examiners, and assigned personnel in unit type aircraft.
  • Conduct a continuous and aggressive flying safety program and maintain a complete file on flying safety matters for the education of all assigned aircrew.
  • Schedule pilots as to type, phase, and degree of flying training required and schedule individual pilots for extra flying hours when determined necessary.
  • Review mission tasking, intelligence, and weather information, perform mission planning, preparation, and filing of flight plans, and crew briefing.
  • Pilot's aircraft and commands crew, operates aircraft controls and equipment.
  • Accomplish a variety of administrative duties related to flight instruction and mission accomplishments, such as scheduling, squadron operations management, combat mission planning, and training.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be a current member of the AF Reserves or willing/qualified to join.
  • A security clearance may be required.
  • If authorized, PCS will be paid IAW JTR and AF Regulations. If receiving an authorized PCS, you may be subject to completing/signing a CONUS agreement.
  • Total salary varies depending on location of position.
  • This position is subject to provision of the DoD Priority Placement Program.
  • Must sign a mobility agreement.
  • Position may be subject to random drug testing.
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.
  • Employee must maintain current certifications.

  • 25% for 1 year annual salary Recruitment Incentive will be authorized for this position.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Supplement to Qualification Standards for Air Reserve Technicians (ART), approved August 2017.

SPECIAL EXPERIENCE: No specific length of experience required. The qualifications of Airplane/Helicopter Pilots or Airplane/Helicopter Flight Instructors in an Air Force active duty and Reserve force are directly related to the completion of prerequisite training and number of flying hours rather than years of experience.

CERTIFICATION: Must have a minimum of 1000 hours total military flight time in Mission Design Series (MDS), hold or qualify for a USAF pilot rating; hold a valid aviation service aeronautical order and have flown military aircraft within the past eight years.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENTS FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at the next lower grade level or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of and skill in the application of rated aviator expertise as a pilot.
  • Knowledge of and ability to formulate plans and courses pertaining to flying operations and unit flying training activities.
  • Knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, and techniques for employment of unit-assigned aircraft.
  • Knowledge of flying operations and the unit mission.
  • Knowledge of the relationship of the various Air Force Reserve entities, other MAJCOMs, and Air Force in overall planning and execution of military operations and evaluations.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues and maintain good working relations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
