Under the guidance of the Food Services Manager or Assistant Food Services Manager, the role involves a variety of responsibilities related to food preparation and service. This includes ensuring that food service equipment and facilities are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner, as well as performing additional related tasks as required.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reading and comprehending English at a level necessary for the accurate preparation and serving of food.
- Lifting and transporting moderately heavy food containers.
- Operating food carts and standing for extended periods.
- Performing basic arithmetic operations such as counting, adding, and subtracting.
- Following written and verbal instructions effectively.
- Building and maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and others encountered during work.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Understanding of basic cleaning and sanitation practices related to food preparation and service, safe lifting techniques for heavy objects, and fundamental safety rules when working with machinery and cleaning supplies. Strong interpersonal skills characterized by tact, patience, and courtesy are also essential.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with some experience in preparing or serving food in large quantities. Alternatively, other qualifications may be considered acceptable by the Personnel Commission.
Certification from the School Nutrition Association, Los Angeles County food handlers, or ServSafe is mandatory during the probationary period.
Some positions may necessitate a valid California Driver License, proof of insurance, and a current Department of Motor Vehicles printout.
This recruitment aims to fill multiple part-time roles requiring 3 hours of work per day for 9 months of the year, as well as to establish a substitute list.
Additional Responsibilities
Tasks may include mixing, chopping, washing, and assembling food items; portioning food for serving; managing food on steam tables; processing canned goods; preparing fruits and vegetables; making salads and sandwiches; assisting in cooking and baking as needed; serving meals to students and staff; counting beverages; organizing food storage and maintaining cleanliness in service areas; washing dishes and kitchen equipment; operating various kitchen appliances; handling cash transactions; assisting with inventory management; and cross-training with supervisory staff to ensure seamless kitchen operations in their absence.
Other typical duties may involve maintaining dining areas and assisting with record-keeping as necessary.
