Security Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Security Officer to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a Security Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of our patients, visitors, and staff.
Key Responsibilities- Provide protective services to people and property, responding to routine and emergency calls for service.
- Assist with day-to-day operations of the department, performing daily operational functions as directed by the Security Supervisor or Dispatcher.
- Respond immediately and appropriately to all emergency requests for assistance issued by the Supervisor or Dispatcher.
- Document all incidents after response and inform the Dispatcher of actions taken.
- Utilize strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to develop and build strong relationships with the hospital community.
- Manage complex and dynamic situations to help restore order, investigate nefarious or criminal activity, and take the appropriate safety and security actions.
- Conduct initial investigations into all reports of suspicious activity, persons, hazards, or risk, and take the necessary steps to mitigate risk to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Take appropriate actions when necessary, based on training procedure and legal requirements.
- Use effective and appropriate de-escalation techniques when addressing disorderly, disruptive, or emotionally charged persons.
- Provide escorts to patients, visitors, employees, and others to ensure the safety of the requester.
- Patrol McLean property and grounds, documenting all deficiencies and/or violations of policy.
- Ensure that only authorized vehicles are allowed access to parking areas controlled by McLean and document violations of parking policy.
- Perform access control functions, including ensuring that all employees, vendors, and contractors are in possession of an authorized form of identification and that it is clearly visible.
- Perform Dispatch and/or Console duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Manager, including coordinating Security activities, acting as liaison to other McLean departments and external agencies, and reflecting the friendly, courteous, helpful, and professional attitude of the department at all times.
- Minimum of a high school diploma required.
- A strong educational background (associates or bachelors degree) in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
- A combination of both experience and education will be considered.
- A minimum of 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.
- Must obtain and maintain required certification in the following programs (training provided by department): CPR/AED/First Aid, International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days).
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including positive image, tact, and diplomacy, active listening, and articulation.
- Effectively interact with people of different levels and cultures, establish positive relationships, gain trust and respect of others.
- Handle a variety of diverse and stressful situations.
- Work effectively both independently and in teams.
- Customer service skills, including accessibility, energy, concern, empathy, positive attitude, collaboration, and flexibility.
- Strong problem-solving skills, critical and analytical thinking, good judgment, prioritizing, industrious, and creative resolutions for positive outcomes.
- Ability to deal with and de-escalate anxious/stressed people and manage aggression.
- High volume of activity; handle complex interpersonal situations and crisis management scenarios.
- Ability to recognize potential impacts of decisions and ensure best positive outcomes to prevent/reduce injury, liability, and/or negative publicity.
- Competence to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, hospital policies, and procedures.
- Reliable and flexible.
- Strong writing skills to provide and maintain documentation to support data.
- Basic computer skills, typing, and use of database software.
- Technology: use of access control and database software, communications equipment, first aid equipment.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. Fluency in more than one language preferred.
