Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)

The United Soccer League (USL) serves as a pivotal force in American soccer, impacting numerous communities nationwide. It is the pioneering organization in the U.S. to establish a comprehensive youth-to-professional pathway for both male and female athletes within a unified framework. This includes three professional leagues: USL Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and the USL W League (women); alongside two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth.

With a commitment to authenticity and inclusivity, the USL aims to deliver an enriching soccer experience for players, fans, and communities across the expanding landscape of American soccer.

Program Objective

Guided by USL Executives and Leaders, the USL Work Experience Program (UWEP) offers students a distinctive chance to acquire practical experience in sports management within a professional league environment. Participants will engage in various strategic projects and initiatives, gaining hands-on experience alongside league staff and member teams.

Interns will be assigned to a specialized department while also collaborating with all league departments, including business development, digital media, club services, analytics, and more. The overarching aim is to furnish students with a comprehensive and practical work experience in the sports industry.

Role Purpose

Under the supervision of the USL Academy team, the Academy Operations Internship Program will assist the department in multiple operational areas. The intern will play a crucial role in the administration and evaluation of league standards, regulations, and policies.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Support the planning and execution of USL Academy Cup events.
  • Manage player and coach registrations for each event.
  • Conduct market research and compile necessary reports.
  • Engage with current and prospective event participants to gather feedback.
  • Assist in club auditing through match review processes.
  • Prepare game reports, including rosters and suspension details.
  • Identify operational requirements and communicate them effectively.
  • Innovate and explore new ideas to enhance USL Academy programming and club engagement.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by senior staff.
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed to gain a holistic understanding of sports operations.
Qualifications
  • Candidates must be pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field and must confirm eligibility for college credit from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is essential.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are required.
  • A positive attitude and a strong work ethic are essential, along with a team-oriented mindset and a willingness to learn.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary, with a focus on quality and consistency.
  • Ability to work under flexible deadlines and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Knowledge of sports, particularly soccer, is preferred but not mandatory.
  • While participating in the Work Experience Program remotely, candidates must have access to a reliable computer or laptop with internet connectivity.
