Job Summary

Uncommon Schools North Star Academy is seeking a skilled and dedicated Middle School Performing Arts Teacher to join our team. As a key member of our educational community, you will be responsible for implementing our performing arts curriculum, producing theatrical and community events, and supporting the development of our school culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach Uncommon Schools' Performing Arts musical theatre curriculum, incorporating music, acting, and movement to engage students and foster their creative expression.
  • Implement curricula and activities to meet grade-level performing arts standards, collaborating with our Performing Arts Team to develop and refine our curriculum.
  • Direct and produce school productions annually, including Community Circle, Latinx & Hispanic Show, Black History Show, Spring Musical, and Moving Up Ceremony for every grade level.
  • Adapt scripts annually, create or order costumes, sets, and props as needed, and supervise production elements such as lights, sound, and set.
  • Produce and oversee the school's Community Circle, organizing all traffic patterns, chants, cheers, drummers, mascots, flags, and working with the principal to rehearse and prepare all students.
  • Oversee breakfast for students daily, greeting students, visitors, and assisting with the start of the day.
  • Assist around the school when not teaching, share responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activities, and commit to continual professional growth.
  • Participate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training in August.
Qualifications
  • Musical theater skills (singing, acting, and moving) and ability to model all three content areas.
  • Some production skills preferred, such as producing, playwriting, directing, or technical support.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player.
  • Bachelor's degree required with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Professional experience on stage is preferred.
  • Strong desire to teach in an Uncommon Schools setting.
  • Willingness to teach using Uncommon teaching methods is required.
  • Valid NJ Certification is helpful but not required.
  • Belief in and alignment with Uncommon Schools' core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable.
