Job Summary

The State of Delaware is seeking a highly skilled Youth Care Specialist I to join our team. As a key member of our youth services team, you will be responsible for providing custodial supervision of youths, ensuring the enforcement and implementation of rules and regulations affecting their care and security.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and participate in daily activities of assigned youth groups, including recreation, education, rehabilitation, and treatment activities, meals, personal hygiene, and living quarters maintenance.
  • Observe and report on youth behavior and adjustment to programs, exchanging written and oral reports with other staff daily.
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with youth to encourage and assist with their social adjustment.
  • Interpret and teach facility procedures, rules, and disciplinary policies to youths.
  • Implement facility security procedures, including regular unit, room, and grounds checks, community/home visits, and frequent observations and monitoring of high-risk youths.
  • Assist in handling serious disturbances and monitor incoming and outgoing visitors to the facility.
  • Escort youths to activities and appointments inside or outside the facility, supervising and conducting them in all settings.
  • Prepare, maintain, and contribute to various records and reports documenting youth information, including behavior management, treatment plans, progress notes, population reports, and inventories.
Requirements
  1. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. At least 21 years of age.
  3. Knowledge of behavior management, including understanding, explaining, describing, and predicting behavior, studying the connection between behavior and its causes, and identifying appropriate behavior modification strategies for individual situations.
  4. Knowledge of supervising youth by overseeing daily activities such as recreation, treatment activities, meals, self-care, transportation, or education.
  5. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
