Anesthesia Nurse Specialist

Jacksonville, Florida, United States UF Health Shands Full time
Position Overview

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is tasked with administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical interventions as directed by the attending physician. This role reports directly to the Chairman and Chief Anesthetist of the Department of Anesthesia, with responsibilities tailored to the age and developmental stage of the patients served. The CRNA may also participate in the evaluation of nursing students.

Essential Duties

The CRNA conducts comprehensive pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluations, which include obtaining necessary consultations and diagnostic tests, as well as prescribing pre-anesthetic medications. The development and execution of an anesthetic care plan are critical, alongside a thorough assessment just prior to the anesthesia induction.

This assessment encompasses a review of the patient's medical history, relevant laboratory results, and any changes in the patient's condition since previous visits. The CRNA is responsible for initiating the anesthetic process by selecting the appropriate anesthesia type.

During the emergence and recovery phases, the CRNA ensures the patient's physiological stability, alleviates pain, manages anesthesia-related side effects, and addresses any complications by administering medications, fluids, or ventilatory support as needed.

The CRNA or their qualified designee must remain with the patient for the duration required based on the patient's anesthesia status until care is transitioned to other qualified personnel. Post-anesthetic care staff must be informed of any specific concerns regarding the patient's condition.

All significant events during the anesthesia process, including dosages and durations of anesthetic agents and other medications, must be meticulously documented for every patient receiving anesthesia care.

Follow-up evaluations and care related to anesthesia complications or side effects are also part of the CRNA's responsibilities, along with discharging patients from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) in accordance with established protocols.

Preparation of all necessary equipment and agents for anesthesia administration is essential to ensure safety and functionality. Any malfunctioning equipment must be reported to the anesthesia technician or Chief Nurse Anesthetist immediately. All resuscitation equipment should be checked prior to the first surgical procedure of the day.

The CRNA is responsible for maintaining the patient's physiological homeostasis and addressing any abnormal responses to anesthesia or surgery. This includes collecting and interpreting physiological data through various monitoring techniques, both non-invasive and invasive.

In critical situations, such as cardiac arrest, the CRNA must evaluate and implement established treatment protocols.

Induction drugs must be administered, and the anesthetic depth must be maintained and adjusted as necessary, ensuring continuous anesthesia care and monitoring throughout the postoperative recovery phase.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills:
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Ability to inspire and guide others.
  • Clinical Expertise: Proficient in evaluating patients preoperatively and obtaining necessary consultations.
  • Effective Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Patient Education: Capable of educating patients and families on anesthetic techniques and pain management.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in intubation, hemodynamic monitoring, regional anesthesia, and post-anesthesia care.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks, maintain logs, analyze data, and manage sensitive information with confidentiality.
