Job Summary

This position is at our Palmer Ranch YMCA. The Lifeguard will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants in or around the YMCA pool.

Key Responsibilities
  • Emergency Response: Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Pool Surveillance: Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Member and Staff Relations: Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Professional Appearance: Displays professional appearance at all times and dresses according to requirements.
  • Safety Rules and Guidelines: Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Swimmer Safety: Ensures all participants wear appropriate swim attire and footwear, and makes sure that first-time swimmers are swim-tested and wear appropriate flotation devices as necessary.
  • Cleanliness and Maintenance: Works to maintain a high level of cleanliness of the deck, structures, equipment, etc.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Shift Coverage: Finds replacement guards when unable to work and completes appropriate paperwork.
  • Equipment Checks: Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Hazardous Conditions: Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Chemical Testing: Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  • Staff Meetings and Training: Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Time Clock and Timesheet: Utilizes the time clock and monitors timesheet, bringing any corrections to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Staff Safety Requirements: Responsible for upholding all staff safety requirements, including cleaning protocols throughout the day, as required by the department.
  • Additional Duties: Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
  • Age Requirement: Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Criminal Background Check: Successfully complete State of Florida Criminal History Background Check requirements as well as meet the Association's policies on background screening.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Workplace Policy: Adhere to the drug/alcohol/smoke-free workplace policy.
  • Decision Making: Sound decision-making skills.
  • Physical and Mental Readiness: Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Lifeguarding Certification: Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA, Red Cross, or other nationally recognized lifeguarding program standards.
  • Professional Appearance and Attitude: Professional appearance and attitude.
