Job Summary

This Licensed Practical Nurse position is located within the Primary Care Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center in Vermont.

Responsibilities
  • Administer medications and treatments accurately and record them accordingly.
  • Determine patient needs, contra-indications, allergies, and identify and record reactions/interactions.
  • Recognize pharmacological implications of medication administration for various age groups.
  • Collect data and observe to determine patient needs, plan patient care based on needs, carry out a developed plan of care, evaluate and adjust plan of care to meet patient needs, and recognize age-specific variations of clients and make appropriate interventions.
  • Recognize and quickly assess emergency situations and make appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Perform procedures accurately, completely, and safely according to White River Junction VAMC Nursing Practice and Policy.
  • Function as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's treatment and discharge plan.
  • Perform nursing care associated with the treatment of wounds, facilitating healing and prevention of infection.
  • Chart according to White River Junction VAMC guidelines and document observation and nursing care administered with patient response on progress notes.
  • Report pertinent information to appropriate personnel during the course of the day.
  • Receive, discuss, and communicate patient information upon transfer or change of tour of duty.
  • Establish constructive relationships with individual patients to elicit feelings and attitudes.
  • Exercise supervision as delegated by Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Promote working relationships based upon communication.
  • Communicate effectively and establish positive therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Create an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance, and self-worth.
  • Conduct self with professional demeanor by unconditionally providing basic courteous behavior to the patient and family.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be able to serve a probationary period.
  • Must be subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must be able to participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Must be able to participate in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) at the time the program was completed by applicant.
  • Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
  • Knowledge and understanding of human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and other staff.
  • Establishes constructive relationships with individual patients and their families to elicit feelings and attitudes, and to promote positive relationships, communication and socialization skills.
  • Fosters an environment of respect for individual patient and family rights to privacy and dignity in all aspects of care delivery.
  • Effectively incorporates knowledge and understanding of established customer service standards in all interactions with patients, family members, and/or other internal/external customers.
Preferred Experience

Experience in busy Primary Care or Ambulatory clinic preferred.
