Early Childhood Paraeducator

This role involves 3.5 hours of work each day across 170 days in a year.
Additionally, it encompasses 3.25 hours daily for 141 days annually.
Initial Year: 7 hours per day for 4 days, followed by 2 days each subsequent year until certification is achieved.
Compensation: Aligns with PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $ (Refer to PSE Salary Schedule).

Required Training:
The selected candidate must complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months post-hire.
Certification Requirements:
Successful completion of the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and the General Paraeducator Certificate as mandated by state regulations. Note that the Paraeducator Certificate Program is subject to state funding availability.
IMPORTANT: To qualify for an interview for this instructional paraeducator position, candidates must meet the following federal minimum employment criteria:
- Minimum Age: 18 years;
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent;
- Additional Qualifications: One of the following:
- Successful completion of the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment;
- AA degree or higher;
- Completion of 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution;
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship program from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries;
- Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program.
TB Testing:
Proof of a passing TB (tuberculosis) test is required prior to official hire.
MMR Vaccine: Required.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The responsibilities of this position include assisting the instructor with various activities for students, such as meal preparation and cleanup, providing individual or small group instruction, monitoring and correcting student behavior, and supervising student activities in various settings.
Job Summary:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Depending on the specific assignment, the Paraeducator - ECEAP may perform a combination of the following:
1. Provide individual or small group instruction in diverse learning activities, including family-style meals to enhance understanding of presented materials. Offer encouragement and support to achieve educational objectives as set by the instructor. Assist in administering objective assessments.
2. Communicate with the instructor regarding individual student progress; adapt methods to cater to a diverse range of student needs; collaborate with the instructor on remediation or enrichment activities. Support professional staff in executing a targeted program.
3. Assist the instructor in maintaining accurate records, logs, charts, assignments, and other documentation for assessing student progress.
4. Supervise student behavior in classrooms, during playtime, at meals, in boarding areas, on field trips, and in restrooms to promote safe and appropriate conduct. Correct behaviors and uphold discipline in accordance with established policies and procedures. Instruct students on behavioral rules and codes for safety, socialization, and personal growth.
5. Aid students in mastering interpersonal and personal skills.
6. Establish and maintain effective communication with students, staff, and parents regarding student progress and safety, as well as community relations. Assist in coordinating parent visits to the classroom and home visits by the instructor. Help direct parent and student volunteers during classroom activities, field trips, and other program events.
7. Provide assistance to special needs students, including lifting, positioning, or aiding with personal hygiene.
8. Perform food setup, preparation, warming, service, and general cleanup. Wash dishes, do laundry, and disinfect tables. May involve preparing specialized food.
9. May conduct or accompany the instructor on home visits for students. Document or assist in documenting the visit and observations.
10. Monitor the need for first aid for injured or ill students and refer for treatment as necessary.
11. Participate in various meetings and training sessions.
12. Assist in maintaining records of attendance, meal counts, and budget changes to comply with local and ESD program requirements.
13. Maintain a daily documentation log of students' transportation information as per program requirements.
14. Collaborate as a member of the instructional team to develop and implement programs and services for eligible children and families.
15. May have flexible hours to enable participation in family and community activities related to the program.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
16. Alert qualified district staff to student issues.
17. Locate, prepare, and/or modify materials for student use, enrichment activities, and special projects under the guidance of the assigned instructor.
18. Prepare, duplicate, collate, and distribute materials; operate various office equipment.
19. Maintain the physical appearance of the classroom and other assigned areas; assemble and store playground equipment as needed; manage supplies as assigned.
20. Provide backup support in the classroom as assigned; answer phones; file materials.
21. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, in line with district ethical guidelines.
22. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Director of Special Services. Receives guidance from assigned certificated staff.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
May encounter frequent interruptions; required to manage a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities; may deal with various physical or emotional disabilities; may occasionally engage with distressed or challenging students. May need to shift tasks and priorities as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Potential exposure to common infectious diseases carried by students; exposure to student noise levels; may occasionally need to lift and position students; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting agents; required to stand for extended periods; supervision during playtime and bus duties necessitates working outdoors in varying weather conditions; may occasionally visit student homes; cooking and food preparation in the presence of students requires heightened safety awareness; may be required to work in non-routine positions such as crouching or bending for extended periods; may occasionally be exposed to visual display terminals for prolonged periods.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to fulfill the assignment, with one year of experience in an early childhood setting preferred. Applicants must possess a current CDA; or an Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate that meets or exceeds CDA requirements; or an AA/BA/MA in any field plus 12 ECE credits; or an AA/BA/MA in any field plus CDA.
Allowable Substitutions:
A high school diploma or GED; one year of experience in an early childhood setting preferred.

Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff. Accuracy in record-keeping. Capability to substitute for the instructor as needed in their absence.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
Requires fingerprinting and background checks to ensure no convictions related to physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to the district's infection control plan. Required to obtain first aid and CPR certification and a Washington State food handler's permit. Proof of passing TB (tuberculosis) test. Hepatitis-B immunization is offered.
