Urban Transportation Planner for the City of Portsmouth

We are seeking an experienced Urban Transportation Planner to join our team in the City of Portsmouth, VA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in transportation planning and experience working with local government agencies.
Job SummaryThe Urban Transportation Planner will be responsible for performing complex professional and administrative work for various transportation studies and plans special projects and programs for the Planning Department. Work involves coordinating and performing transportation planning, research, and analysis. Reports to Director of Planning.
Essential Job Functions- Maintains and implements the city's Transportation Master Plan; analyzes developments to determine any impact to the transportation system; coordinates interdepartmental review and analysis of transportation issues.
- Serves as a representative for the city at local and regional transportation conferences or meetings with groups such as the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), Hampton Roads Transit, and public civic organizations; meets with developers, and planning and designing professionals.
- Coordinates maintenance and use of the City's Transportation Micro Simulation Model; develops and prepares technical and staff reports for assigned planning activities and projects.
- Provides information to the general public; keeps abreast of current and future issues and trends; may review plans prepared by planning professionals, contractors, or designing professionals, to ensure compliance with city codes, State regulations, design, and construction standards.
- Conducts studies and reports, and prepares recommendations on transportation issues, and presents findings to Planning Commission and City Council.
- Serves as a liaison for department divisions, other city departments, various committees, agencies, civic groups, and organizations, and the general public.
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- A Bachelor's degree in Planning, or a related field and 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation planning at the local or regional government level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
The estimated salary for this position is between $71,098.00 and $102,380.00 annually.
