About this Opportunity

Brunswick County is currently seeking applications for a Real Estate Appraiser to join our Tax Department. The Real Estate Appraiser is responsible for conducting technical evaluations of land, residential properties, and improvements for tax assessment purposes. This role involves engaging with property owners, creating layouts of structures, and assessing property size, construction type, material quality, and other relevant appraisal data necessary to determine taxable value. Additionally, the Real Estate Appraiser will compute and evaluate lot sizes, construction areas, subdivisions, and land divisions.

Successful candidates will demonstrate initiative and independent judgment to ensure the correct application of established policies and procedures to individual appraisal cases. The Real Estate Appraiser will report directly to the Chief Appraiser.

Education and Experience

High school diploma (or equivalent) AND two (2) to five (5) years of experience in real property appraisal; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

• Valid NC or SC driver license required.
• Tax Appraiser Certification (from Ad Valorem Tax Division of the NC Department of Revenue) or the ability to obtain within the first two (2) years of employment.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically capable of operating various machinery and equipment, including computers, copiers, calculators, map machines, microfilm viewers, tape measures, and other related tools. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and exert a negligible amount of force consistently to move objects. Physical demands exceed those for Sedentary Work. Light Work typically requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Must be able to work in an outdoor environment.
