The physical demands outlined here are typical for team members to effectively execute the essential functions of their role in powerline construction.
While fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, team members will regularly need to communicate effectively. Frequent physical activities include standing, walking, using hands for various tasks, and reaching with arms.
Team members may also be required to perform strenuous physical tasks, climb various structures (wood, steel, etc.), and engage in bending, kneeling, or crawling. The role may involve lifting or moving weights exceeding 50 lbs. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
In this role, team members may often encounter fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical components, and vibrations. Exposure to extreme conditions at construction sites is common, and the noise level can be high. Powerline construction tasks are primarily conducted outdoors and are subject to varying weather conditions.
General Expectations:
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment
- Capability to operate heavy machinery used in powerline construction
- Effective reading, writing, and communication skills
- Willingness to travel long distances on short notice when necessary
- Flexibility to work extended hours in various locations as required
- Capacity to lift weights exceeding 50 lbs.
- Openness to working overtime when requested
- Safely executing new construction, maintenance, or repair tasks on energized and de-energized overhead systems
- Conducting proper inspections of rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Understanding the appropriate use of personal protective equipment
- Stringing overhead wires
- Setting poles and anchors
- Assisting in the installation of transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, cross-arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear
- Helping to replace fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems
- Regularly working with energized high voltage systems, requiring skill and caution to ensure safety
- Maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in optimal condition
- Performing rigorous physical labor as needed
- Understanding the proper use of company radios
- Grasping basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying techniques
- Comprehending the correct use and maintenance of hand tools
- Being capable of following directions
- Possessing a foundational knowledge of materials used in line work
- Identifying primary and secondary voltage on circuits
- Familiarity with induced voltage
- Assisting with the installation and connection of single-phase transformers
- Being able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape procedures
- Understanding the fundamental concepts of equipment setup and grounding
- Working at heights and/or in confined spaces
- Comprehending minimum approach distances
- Understanding excavation and shoring requirements
- Checking voltage on transformers
- Installing and removing services as needed
- Climbing various structures (wood, steel, etc.) with the necessary tools
- Understanding the use of Kellum grips
- Identifying different materials used in line work
- Working outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions
- Completing all other related tasks as required to fulfill job responsibilities
