Position Overview

The Chief Estimator for Self-Perform Construction is responsible for overseeing a team of Estimators with expertise in various aspects of self-perform construction. This role is crucial for maintaining ongoing relationships with existing clients, securing new contracts, and achieving targeted revenue and overhead contributions.

In collaboration with Regional General Managers, the Chief Estimator will assess and select viable opportunities, work with Operations to devise effective strategies for project acquisition, allocate resources for pricing, ensure adherence to best practices, and formulate risk management strategies to uphold Graycor's risk profile. This position will particularly focus on steel erection, equipment placement, and piping installation within sectors such as energy transition, gas infrastructure, steel manufacturing, and industrial production. The ideal candidate will be results-oriented, promote a collaborative work environment, engage in the professional development of Estimators, and drive continuous improvement across all business facets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with regional General Managers to align Estimating resources with sales objectives.
  • Oversee the proposal development process from initial Request for Proposal to final submission.
  • Develop conceptual estimates to support preconstruction activities and client interactions.
  • Utilize previous experience in self-performance to strategically position the company.
  • Manage self-perform estimating for structural steel, equipment setting, and piping installation projects.
  • Lead the identification and evaluation of Subcontractors to enhance proposal development.
  • Analyze labor strategies, installation methodologies, proposal timelines, and commercial conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of estimates to ensure alignment with historical data, market trends, and project specifications.
  • Enhance and expand estimating templates, historical cost databases, conceptual estimating models, and self-perform estimating tools for broader application within the business.
  • Provide guidance and expertise in addressing operational and marketing challenges.
  • Mentor Estimators and operational staff on self-perform estimating, subcontractor proposal assessment, and departmental software.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, a commitment to system improvement, and a passion for developing talent.
  • Over 10 years of experience in the industrial construction sector, particularly in proposal development or project execution within a self-perform context. A Bachelor's degree is preferred, with a focus on piping estimation being advantageous.
  • Familiarity with guaranteed maximum price and lump sum competitive bidding environments.
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail, rigor, and discipline in work processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient proposal presentation abilities.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Suite applications.
