Cardiovascular Physician Assistant Specialist

Under the direction and supervision of a staff cardiovascular surgeon, the Cardiovascular Physician Assistant provides high-quality, cost-effective patient care by performing cardiovascular surgical preparation procedures, peri-operative and post-operative procedures, and assists in performing cardiovascular surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Performs admission evaluation on all new patients, including obtaining basic medical information and history, reviewing patient medical records, performing physical exams, transcribing history and medical findings into patient medical records, and reporting deviations from normal findings to attending physicians.
- Provides patient and family education on pre-operative procedures, including surgery, recovery, and risk factor modification, as well as blood transfusion information.
- Performs cardiovascular surgery peri-operative procedures, including locating and displaying chest x-rays and pertinent patient information, reviewing patient charts, and noting allergies, pertinent medical history, abnormal physical findings, catheterization and/or ECHO data, and specific cardiovascular disease.
- Assists in performing cardiovascular surgical procedures, including assisting staff cardiovascular surgeons in opening chests and cannulating great vessels and hearts.
- Performs invasive procedures, including insertion, removal, and monitoring of LABP, chest tube, arterial line placement, central line placement, and Swan Ganz insertion, thoracentesis, femoral cutdown, urethral catheterization, and peripheral venous cannulation.
- Administers intravenous medications for treatment of arrhythmias.
- Performs post-operative procedures, including transcription of standard post-operative orders into patient medical records, assisting physicians with evaluation and management of intravascular volume, pharmacological therapeutics, and nutritional status, reviewing patients' cardiac, respiratory, renal, neurological, and gastrointestinal status during recovery, reviewing vital signs, laboratory, and x-ray studies, and assisting with technical management of patients, including introduction, maintenance, and removal of intravascular catheters and percutaneous thoracostomy tubes.
- Performs patient discharge in conjunction with social workers, pharmacists, and physical therapists, and dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner.
- Graduate of an approved primary care physician assistant or surgical assistant program.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Physician Assistant License (California) and Basic Life Support certification required.
- Experience as a cardiovascular physician assistant and ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment preferred.
