About the Role

Cleveland Clinic is seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to join our Orthopedic Service Line team. As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest level of patient care and safety during surgical procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Review daily assignments and ensure surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia are met.
  • Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs, taking into consideration age, physiological, cultural, and physical status.
  • Plan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment, and MD preferences.
  • Assemble, check, and open sterile packs, sutures, etc.
  • Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and electrical and environmental safety in the department.
  • Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting, side-site verification, and other departmental policies and procedures.
  • Remain with the sterile set-up to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Assist with draping; report/correct any break in sterile technique as they occur.
  • Prepare/edit surgeon's preference lists to assure quality care of the surgical patient.
  • Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes, including status of surgical procedure.
  • Assure that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use.
  • Collect specimens as directed by surgeon, identify origin of each specimen to RN Circulator.
  • Follow standard policy and procedure for specimen collection.
  • Complete Repair Worksheet on all malfunctioning equipment with proper follow-through.
  • Demonstrate prudence in par level supplies and utilization.
  • Serve as a resource individual for a surgical sub-specialty.
  • Assist surgeon and assistants with retraction and suction as directed.
  • Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly utilizing universal precautions.
  • Coordinate with RN Circulator to assure that required equipment and supplies are available prior to patient entry.
  • Maintain an orderly sterile field keeping accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods, and instrumentation according to policy and procedure.
  • Display dexterity in the use of surgical instrumentation and knowledge of surgical procedure.
  • Assist RN Circulator to ensure proper room utilization through decreased turnover time per CPT and scheduled procedural time review.
  • Assure that all instrumentation is returned to Decontamination with proper documentation count sheets.
Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in a multi-disciplined OR in an acute care hospital setting preferred.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES or completion of military surgical technology program required. Or Licensed Practical Nurse will meet the requirements.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).
Work Environment

The workload is heavy and requires constant lifting, moving of patients, equipment, instrument trays, and supplies. Able to lift items up to 50 pounds without assistance and greater than 50 pounds with assistance. Stooping, pushing, and pulling required when moving patients or equipment into position for surgery.

Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
