PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Under the close guidance of a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) and in accordance with established protocols, this role involves a range of technical and clinical responsibilities aimed at supporting the Pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications and pharmaceutical products.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Collaborates with the registered pharmacist in the routine formulation, preparation, and distribution of medication orders for both inpatients and outpatients.
2. Conducts rounds to nursing stations as scheduled, delivering medications and IV solutions post-verification by a registered Pharmacist. Retrieves physician orders and communication slips efficiently.
3. Evaluates incoming orders to determine the appropriate routing to the IV room and/or dispensing area, ensuring that STAT and NOW orders are promptly communicated to the RPh.
4. Issues supplies to various hospital departments and secures necessary signatures where required.
5. Utilizes the Meditech Pharmacy Module as per training.
6. Proposes enhancements to the Director of Pharmacy regarding various departmental programs and procedures.
7. Aids in the training of pharmacy technician trainees.
8. Demonstrates effective telephone communication techniques, both in receiving and initiating calls.
9. Responds to inquiries from hospital staff and patients appropriately or directs them to the relevant authority.
10. Participates in pharmacy staff meetings and in-service training programs.
11. Maintains a clean and organized workspace.
12. Prepares IV admixtures as per training protocols.
13. Repackages medications into unit dose containers, ensuring they are verified by the RPh before being added to pharmacy inventory.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Fundamental interpersonal skills.
3. Must possess a valid license from the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations as a Pharmacy Technician.
4. Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.
