Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the Firefighter First Class is to engage in specialized tasks either independently or as part of a team within the realms of Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, and Fire Prevention. This is a position of significant responsibility focused on safeguarding lives and property. The individual in this role is tasked with extinguishing fires and rescuing individuals from peril, while also providing immediate medical assistance to those who are injured or unwell. The Firefighter First Class is expected to demonstrate considerable initiative within established guidelines while executing their duties. They possess the authority to take necessary actions to fulfill their responsibilities, ensuring alignment with the outlined position standards. Decisions are made under the guidance of a supervisor, with work performed under the direct oversight of the Lieutenant or Officer in charge of the assigned station.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

The following tasks constitute the majority of the responsibilities associated with this position. Additional tasks may be assigned by the supervisor as necessary.

  • Adheres to established City policies, departmental Standard Operating Guidelines, and accepted practices in fire suppression and emergency medical services.
  • Responds to emergency calls as required, available 24/7.
  • Quickly reacts to alarms in designated areas as part of a fire or emergency services team.
  • Enters hazardous environments to extinguish fires and rescue individuals, applying various rescue and first aid techniques.
  • Utilizes necessary equipment and tools from apparatus for task execution, ensuring proper return and loading post-assignment.
  • Advances fire hose lines, directs streams, and extinguishes fires across various scenarios, including residential and commercial properties.
  • Conducts forcible entry and ventilation of burning structures as necessary.
  • Engages in salvage operations to mitigate damage from water and smoke.
  • Performs overhaul operations to locate hidden fires and clear debris post-extinguishment.
  • May assume duties of a relief driver, with delegated authority to operate and maintain assigned apparatus.
  • Participates in training, maintenance, pre-fire planning, public education, and fire prevention initiatives.
  • Conducts maintenance and cleaning of facilities, fleet, and equipment.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Engages in assignments as an individual or team member during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • May provide technical support and participate in special committees; attends relevant meetings and presentations.
  • Conducts inspections of facilities, equipment, and personnel to assess operational effectiveness.
  • May provide various non-emergency public assistance services as needed.
  • Responsible for operating fire and rescue apparatus as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • In-depth knowledge of municipal street systems and overall geography for effective navigation.
  • Basic understanding of fire suppression and emergency medical practices, equipment, and standards.
  • Ability to learn and comply with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Capacity to react swiftly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the public and colleagues.
  • Proficient in operating various communication and emergency response equipment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent certification recognized by the State of Florida Department of Education. Successful completion of the entry-level test for firefighter or equivalent qualifications.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Valid State of Florida driver license, Class D. Completion of relevant fire standards and training certifications. Current Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician license with appropriate endorsements.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Frequent lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of equipment weighing over 20 pounds, with occasional weights exceeding 150 pounds.
  • Work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings, exposure to fire, smoke, dust, and extreme temperatures.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of physical agility tests as required.
  • Submission of necessary documentation for consideration in the testing process.
  • Residency requirements must be met within one year of hire.
  • Submission of valid certifications and licenses is mandatory for application consideration.
