About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Support Specialist to join our team at Kaiser Permanente. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

Job Summary

The Mental Health Support Specialist will work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team to provide individualized support and care to patients with mental health needs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Orienting patients to the hospital setting, rules and regulations, patient rights, and treatment team system.
  • Performing as a companion for newly admitted patients to establish rapport and facilitate social networks with other patients on the unit.
  • Taking temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, and weight; monitoring seclusion/restraint status; and recording observations/findings in patients' charts.
  • Observing patients' physical and psychological needs and reporting findings to the charge nurse.
  • Participating as a member of the treatment team and providing input into the formulation of patients' master treatment plans.
  • Providing input and assisting in planning therapeutic interventions in situational crises.
  • Participating in/conducting daily community meetings with team members to set goals for the day.
  • Implementing training for patients in developing self-help skills such as toileting, feeding, bathing, dressing, basic oral hygiene, and other activities of daily living.
  • Implementing adjunctive services (recreational and diversional activities) planned and developed by the RPN, Recreational Therapist, and/or Occupational Therapist for the general therapeutic milieu of the unit.
  • Maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu for patients and employees at all times, reporting, and initiating corrective measures for any known unsafe environmental conditions.
  • Monitoring contraband materials and enforcing unit rules and regulations at all times.
  • Evaluating, with the charge nurse and other team members, the effectiveness of approaches utilized in crisis intervention during the shift.
  • Assisting in the evaluation of patients' conditions and progress based on their master treatment plans.
  • Admitting, transferring, and/or discharging patients; assisting in emergency procedures such as fire escape and drill; transporting/escorting patients as assigned; providing physical care to patients who are physically and/or emotionally unable to take care of themselves; attending in-service and other continuing educational programs; temporarily working on another unit, as necessary; participating in hospital-wide quality assurance and infection control activities; and participating in research surveys.

Salary and Benefits

The estimated salary range for this position is $45,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. Additionally, benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching program, paid time off, and opportunities for professional growth and development.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association within one month of hire.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the application of knowledge and abilities specified below for the Full Performance level in providing full-range services to clients independently.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and work rules of the work site.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a mental health facility/unit involving learning and performing selected therapeutic activities involving various types of mental health problems and general behavioral and psychiatric procedures is preferred. A minimum of one year of mental health work experience in an acute care setting is also preferred.
