Position Summary

This role is based in Akron, OH, and we are offering full relocation assistance. Please note that this position requires the candidate to be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate.

As a Sustainability Assessment Specialist, you will be instrumental in analyzing the environmental effects and sustainability of our products and processes throughout their lifecycle. Your main duties will include conducting lifecycle assessments, gathering data, and evaluating information to measure the environmental performance of our offerings. You will work alongside cross-functional teams to create products and solutions that adhere to sustainability principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed lifecycle assessments (LCAs) for various products and processes, examining raw materials, production, transportation, usage, and end-of-life stages.
  • Collect and analyze data from diverse sources to ensure accuracy and reliability in assessing the environmental impacts and resource consumption associated with our products.
  • Utilize specialized LCA software and tools (preferably GaBi) to model scenarios and predict the environmental implications of potential operational changes.
  • Establish key sustainability metrics and benchmarks to monitor our progress towards environmental objectives.
  • Collaborate with research and development teams to incorporate EcoDesign principles into product innovation, aiming to reduce environmental footprints.
  • Engage with supply chain and procurement teams to gather, process, and evaluate lifecycle inventory data to assess the environmental performance of suppliers and materials.
  • Provide actionable recommendations for optimizing processes and materials to lessen our environmental impact while ensuring product quality and efficiency.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices, regulations, and emerging trends in sustainability and lifecycle assessments, including knowledge of GHG Protocol and Science Based Target regulations.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and presentations to convey LCA findings and recommendations to stakeholders and management.
  • Participate in sustainability-focused projects and initiatives to improve our company's overall environmental performance.
  • Contribute to educational and training content related to LCA, material sustainability, circular economy, and ESG.
  • Maintain databases of information regarding energy alternatives, emissions, and other relevant data from suppliers and published literature.
  • Identify sustainable alternatives to industrial waste management practices.
  • Explore opportunities for reducing environmental impacts through various tools, including energy efficiency, optimized materials, and supply chain engagement.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental science, engineering, sustainability, or a related discipline.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in conducting lifecycle assessments and applying LCA methodologies.
  • Strong analytical abilities to interpret complex data and derive actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with LCA software and tools (e.g., GaBi) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, standards, and sustainability frameworks (e.g., ISO 14040/14044, GHG Protocol, WBCSD, GRI).
  • Understanding of Corporate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions accounting principles, net zero, and SBTi.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborative and proactive mindset, capable of working effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for sustainability and a genuine commitment to making a positive environmental impact.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to assess manufacturing and product data to identify how LCA can provide unique business value.
  • Preferred experience in the tire industry.

Minimum Qualifications

Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a master's degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
