Northern Star (Pogo) LLC presents an exciting and fulfilling opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer at our esteemed Pogo operation in Alaska, operating on a rotational camp schedule.

Role Overview:

  • The Geotechnical Engineer will report directly to the Mine Superintendent, focusing on the effective management of all geotechnical issues to safely meet production targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and address geotechnical hazards.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of site systems and standards for managing geotechnical risks, including procedures, processes, and databases.
  • Review mining instructions and stope designs, providing recommendations for safe extraction practices.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant company policies and statutory regulations.
  • Regularly review and update Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP).
  • Conduct geotechnical evaluations and risk assessments, making informed recommendations to manage hazards effectively.
  • Collect and analyze geotechnical data related to potential and actual rockfall incidents.
  • Collaborate with key personnel, including Geologists, Surveyors, Engineers, Managers, and Operators.
  • Assist in the daily, weekly, and monthly reporting of mine geotechnical parameters.

Candidate Profile:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the mining sector, primarily in underground hard rock geotechnical engineering.
  • Familiarity with underground mining techniques (e.g., long hole open stoping, air leg stoping, and jumbo stoping).
  • Foundational experience in numerical modeling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Mine Design Software (e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine, Rocscience Software).
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Adaptability to evolving procedures and practices.
  • Understanding of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
  • Ability to pass a background check and post-offer physical examination.

Work Schedule:

This position operates on a 15 days on, 13 days off schedule, with shifts extending up to 12 hours or more at a remote campsite. Employees will encounter extreme conditions, including variable weather, dust, noise, and confined workspaces.

During work rotations, employees are required to reside at the company-provided camp, which offers dining services, recreational facilities, and comfortable accommodation. The camp includes amenities such as a games room, exercise facilities, sauna, and dormitory-style rooms equipped with landline phones, Wi-Fi, and cable TV.
