The Town of South Boston is in search of qualified individuals for the role of Automotive and Facility Maintenance Specialist I. This position involves engaging in complex technical tasks related to the upkeep and repair of the street system and associated facilities. The role operates under the limited supervision of the Facilities Operations Administrative Manager.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


The following duties are representative of the various types of work performed. The absence of specific tasks does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or logically assigned.

  • Collaborates with the Facilities Operations Administrative Manager to conduct routine inspections of the maintenance workshop. Oversees equipment and vehicle repairs, manages supply orders, and codes expenditures.
  • Executes repair and maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment utilizing advanced diagnostic tools for accurate repair assessments. Maintains a detailed log of all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Secures estimates for external repairs of vehicles and equipment, coordinates transportation to service providers, and monitors repair progress. Ensures routine preventative maintenance plans are followed for shop equipment.
  • Creates and maintains a thorough routine maintenance schedule for all public works vehicles and equipment. Develops timelines, supervises inspections, and guarantees timely maintenance to enhance performance and durability.
  • Marks cemetery plots for burials, records ownership details, and manages monument permits. Provides assistance to buyers and funeral homes, directing them to the appropriate office for payment processing.
  • Maintains an updated inventory of town vehicles and equipment, revising the spreadsheet monthly and ensuring accuracy. Aids in the organization of surplus equipment sales.
  • Participates in emergency weather operations, operating machinery to clear and plow streets. Operates dump trucks and supports the street maintenance team as necessary.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the operation, maintenance, and repair of municipal vehicles.
  • Familiarity with tools, equipment, and specialized instruments used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to identify worn, defective, or improperly adjusted components.
  • Capability to follow both verbal and written instructions and maintain accurate records of service and repair activities.
  • Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED combined with substantial maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Requirements:

  • A valid commercial driver's license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of a valid CDL Class A or B.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to interact effectively with the public and businesses closely associated with the town.
  • Availability for on-call duties outside regular business hours to assist with cemetery lot marking.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed for special events or weather-related situations.

Compensation and Benefits:


Salary Range: $37,274 - $47,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
