Microbial Pathogen Research Associate

Columbus Ohio, United States Nationwide Children's Hospital Full time

Position Overview:
We are in search of a dedicated and detail-oriented recent graduate who possesses some laboratory research experience.

The successful candidate will primarily engage in hands-on laboratory work, while also gaining insights into various scientific disciplines, including scientific writing, practical methodologies, data interpretation, critical thinking, literature evaluation, and presentation skills.

This role entails managing all facets of an independent research project under the guidance of a postdoctoral researcher and Dr. King. Our investigations center on bacteria belonging to the Streptococcus genus.

These bacterial species are responsible for numerous human illnesses, such as pneumonia, bacteremia, otitis media, and endocarditis, significantly contributing to global morbidity and mortality rates.

To develop more effective vaccines and therapeutic strategies, a deeper comprehension of the pathogenic mechanisms employed by these bacteria is essential.

Glycans are present on all host surfaces and many host molecules, playing a pivotal role in the disease process.

Dr.

King's lab focuses on understanding how alpha-hemolytic streptococci interact with and modify host glycans, and how these interactions influence colonization and disease progression.

Current research efforts are directed towards examining how the endocarditis-causing pathogen S. oralis interacts with glycans in the oral cavity and heart, contributing to disease manifestation.
