Job Summary:

Under general supervision and following established procedures, the Ultrasound Technologist will select proper imaging techniques, operate ultrasound-imaging equipment to acquire images and provide an initial interpretation of exam to the physician in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain patient identification, prepare patients, and obtain relevant patient history.
  • Explain exams to patients, maintaining ethical standards and delivering patient care under scope of license/training.
  • Utilize universal precaution techniques and safety techniques specific to patient's status.
  • Perform Ultrasound studies on premature infants in an intensive care unit, demonstrating knowledge of illnesses related to this patient population and various types of care being provided.
  • Operate all equipment used during the workday, notifying appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.
  • Rotate within department, divisions, and all offsite clinics, promoting harmony within department and maintaining effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.
  • Execute paperwork, PACS, RIS, and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam.
  • Prepare equipment, room, and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use, stocking and supplying room and general department area as needed.
  • May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department.
  • Participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department.
  • Assume all responsibilities for oncall coverage and remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.
  • Remain up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment, participating in education programs and meeting state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.
  • Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

Requirements:

  • Graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months' full time clinical ultrasound experience.
  • Meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
  • Become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Second specialty within second year of employment. Additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.
  • Ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System for registering patients.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
  • Aware of hazards within the department, adhering to safety standards established by Brigham & Women's Hospital and other regulatory agencies.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal teaching clinical hospital environment.
  • Exposure to high frequency sound waves.

  • Standing and walking most of the day.
