Position Summary

Claflin University is in search of a Chief Advancement Officer to design and execute a comprehensive strategy aimed at substantial growth in fundraising and alumni involvement. This role is pivotal in leading the university's initiatives to secure essential resources to fulfill its mission and vision, with a focus on major contributions, capital initiatives, and sustainable alumni support.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Chief Advancement Officer will report directly to the President and will be a key member of the President's Senior Management Team, overseeing a dedicated team of 16 professionals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • develop and implement a holistic advancement strategy that aligns with Claflin University's mission and long-term goals;
  • provide inspirational leadership that motivates and mobilizes the advancement team, volunteers, and the wider university community towards achieving fundraising objectives.
Fundraising and Development

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • drive fundraising initiatives by identifying, nurturing, and securing significant donations of $500,000 or more;
  • lead capital initiatives, coordinating efforts that require meticulous planning, persuasive communication, and consistent follow-through;
  • enhance the alumni giving program to ensure a sustainable increase in alumni contributions and foster enduring relationships.
Alumni Relations

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • strengthen and broaden alumni networks, devising strategies that engage alumni in university life and encourage their support;
  • organize alumni events and communications that cultivate a strong sense of community and loyalty to Claflin University.
Marketing and Communication

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • oversee the creation of marketing and communication strategies that effectively promote the university's advancement objectives to potential donors and alumni;
  • ensure that messaging is coherent, targeted, and reflects the university's values and aspirations.
Volunteer Engagement

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • enhance the senior volunteer framework, including boards, councils, and committees, by recruiting and training high-level volunteers to support advancement activities;
  • build strong relationships with volunteers and equip them with the necessary tools and information to advocate for and support the university.
Performance Evaluation

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • utilize a data-driven approach to evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising campaigns and engagement initiatives;
  • continuously refine strategies based on outcomes, best practices, and industry trends to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the advancement function.
Resource Management

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • manage the human and financial resources of the advancement office, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and optimal utilization;
  • prepare and oversee the advancement budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and strategic allocation of resources.
Institutional Collaboration

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • collaborate with the university's senior leadership to integrate advancement considerations into broader strategic planning;
  • work closely with academic and administrative leaders to identify funding priorities and opportunities that align with donor interests.
Governance and Compliance

The Chief Advancement Officer will:
  • ensure that all advancement activities comply with university policies and relevant laws and regulations;
  • maintain transparency and accountability in all fundraising practices and donor relations;
  • perform other duties as assigned within the scope of this role.
Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, along with a minimum of ten years of experience as a senior-level advancement professional in higher education, is preferred for this position.
