The City of Las Cruces is seeking a skilled Commercial Plumber to join our team. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for the repair, maintenance, and installation of sewer, water, gas, heating, and cooling systems, and boilers and backflow prevention systems within City facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance to unclog various bathroom equipment and drains
  • Repair or replace broken lines and install bathroom equipment to maintain functionality
  • Install, repair, and maintain water systems, including copper and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) lines, water valves, sinks, showers, water fountains, water heaters, and icemakers
  • Perform startup and maintenance of the pump room for all City-owned swimming pools
  • Install, test, and repair gas lines and appliances
  • Install, maintain, and repair heating gas units, evaporative coolers, water boilers, and backflow valves
  • Create and update appropriate records, process various transactions, complete necessary forms, prepare estimates, complete work orders, process invoices, and respond to and resolve various complaints and problems as authorized and in accordance with established policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and three (3) years of plumbing work experience is required
  • A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy
  • State of New Mexico Journeyman Plumber and Backflow Certification required
  • Selected candidate must obtain a NM Journeyman Gas License or NM Journeyman Boiler License within two (2) years of employment
  • A valid Class D driver's license required

Working Conditions

  • Position functions within facilities and outdoors with exposure to all types of weather and traffic conditions
  • Some work requires being on the roofs of buildings, inside attics, floor crawl spaces, and sewer pits with exposure to noise, mechanical hazards, gases, chemicals, fumes, dust, moving equipment, and vehicles

Physical Demands

  • Heavy lifting and carrying up to one-hundred (100) pounds is required
  • Frequent reaching above and below shoulder height, bending, balancing, climbing, kneeling, and squatting

Working Relationships

  • Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, and responding to customer issues
  • May require stand-by status, and working extended hours, including evenings and weekends, holidays, and responding to emergencies
