About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and visionary General Counsel to join our team at St. Mary's College of California. As a key member of our leadership team, the General Counsel will play a critical role in shaping the College's strategic direction and ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic legal guidance to the President, Board of Trustees, and other senior leaders on all matters related to the College's operations, including governance, academic affairs, and compliance.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the College's legal services strategy, including the management of outside counsel and the coordination of all legal affairs.
  • Conduct regular reviews of College policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with risk management to identify and mitigate potential legal risks, and develop strategies to prevent and respond to legal issues.
  • Advise on collective bargaining processes and agreements, and provide guidance on labor relations and employment law.
  • Manage the legal services budget and oversee the centralization of expenditures related to the College's legal services.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school with a minimum of 7 years of legal experience.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction, and be willing to seek admission to the California Bar and maintain good standing.
  • Strong generalist knowledge and expertise on a wide range of federal, state, and local laws that relate to the mission and operation of a private, non-profit, tax-exempt higher education institution.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability, motivation, and enthusiasm to design and establish a new legal services operation for the College.
  • Expert knowledge on issues of academic freedom and the ability to navigate tensions between academic freedom and compliance with the College's legal requirements.
  • Unquestionable integrity, trustworthiness, and a commitment to upholding rigorous ethical standards and confidentiality.
  • Professionalism, decorum, and diplomacy in all interactions, with the ability to engage others with respect and empathy, in line with the College's mission and values.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, capable of effectively conveying complex legal concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience conducting or advising on conducting legally sufficient complex internal investigations.
  • Experience negotiating and/or interpreting collective bargaining agreements is desired, but not required.
What We Offer
