The Executive Director of Innovation plays a pivotal role in fostering a dynamic and supportive environment for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs. This position is crucial for driving the commercialization of innovative technologies and the establishment of new ventures that will significantly impact both local and global economies.
Key Responsibilities:- Enhance the value of the innovation portfolio by leading and mentoring staff to identify and prioritize opportunities, guiding them through the commercialization process, including partnerships, licensing, and startup development.
- Develop and oversee support networks and initiatives, such as expert networks, funding programs, and other resources that facilitate the commercialization of research.
- Identify and pursue significant grants and partnerships with government and industry to bolster the impact of research initiatives.
- Manage the intellectual property portfolio, directing strategy and overseeing the protection and assessment of innovations.
- Foster relationships with startup licensees and manage equity portfolios, ensuring compliance with ownership regulations.
- Support negotiations related to licensing and contracts with startups, industries, and academic institutions.
- A Master's degree or higher in a relevant field, coupled with a decade of experience in management and strategic leadership, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience in developing university research and commercialization programs, along with strong team management and administrative leadership skills.
- Track record of engaging with regional economic initiatives and securing grants.
- Established relationships with industry and public sector stakeholders.
- Experience in supporting startup companies and collaborating with various investors.
- Comprehensive understanding of patenting systems and strategies for intellectual property management.
- Expertise in financial operations and budgeting, demonstrating fiscal responsibility.
- Ability to leverage data analytics for informed decision-making across the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
- Expertise in strategic planning and program development.
- In-depth knowledge of higher education dynamics, including research funding and technology transfer.
- Capacity to mentor and guide junior staff effectively.
- Comfortable operating in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments with ongoing change.
