Job Overview

The Library Support Assistant plays a vital role in aiding library personnel with the upkeep and arrangement of library resources. This position requires a strong understanding of library materials, services, and programs to deliver exceptional service to library visitors.

The Library Support Assistant is responsible for various routine tasks that contribute to the daily operations of the library and assist in the preparation for special events and programs.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Circulation Desk Duties:
  • Welcome patrons and foster a friendly environment.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service to library users.
  • Manage the checkout process for library materials.
  • Handle the check-in of returned items.
  • Facilitate holds on library materials.
  • Issue new and replacement library cards.
  • Process transactions for lost or overdue items.
  • Guide patrons in using the library catalog system.
  • Provide reference assistance or direct inquiries to the appropriate staff.
  • Manage reserve requests and inter-library loans.
  • Assist patrons with microfilm readers.
  • Complete petty cash documentation and maintain receipts.
  • Make photocopies for library visitors.
  • Oversee fax services.

General Responsibilities:
  • Organize and shelve all returned books daily.
  • Return audio materials and videos to their proper locations.
  • Sort and distribute mail as necessary.
  • Empty the book drop and check in returned items.
  • Monitor computer usage by library patrons.
  • Answer phone calls as required.
  • Process telephone renewals.
  • Provide general information regarding library hours and scheduled programs.
  • Address reference inquiries or refer them to other staff members.
  • Manage meeting room bookings using the library's scheduling system.
  • Check and respond to electronic communications.
  • Collect usage statistics through designated forms.

Work Schedule:
  • Up to 20 hours per week with some flexibility.
  • Availability during weekdays.
  • Potential for up to 30 hours per week during staff shortages.
  • Regular work hours consist of 4-hour shifts.
