Position Summary:

The role involves engaging in land surveying activities and executing additional responsibilities as directed by the Survey Manager. The output of the work is typically assessed upon completion to ensure alignment with the overarching goals, policies, and procedures of the organization. The primary tasks are governed by established procedures or guidelines, allowing for some discretion in method selection, prioritization of work, and project planning and coordination.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in the preliminary and follow-up planning of data utilizing Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and similar technological systems to establish or re-establish boundary locations, land corners, survey markers, and monuments in accordance with Public Land Survey System (PLSS) standards.
  • Collect data by operating survey instruments and equipment, documenting observations, preparing notes on topographical features, and creating as-built plans while interpreting maps and specifications and performing necessary calculations.
  • Maintain both manual and digital records, sketches, maps, reports, electronic drawings, and legal descriptions of surveys to accurately represent the work conducted.
  • Identify survey locations, locate markers, set pins, hubs, benchmarks, and stake pins while keeping a detailed record of these activities.
  • Calculate and convert survey data to generate maps for distribution using AutoCAD and Civil 3-D software.
  • Compile, submit, and manage activity and technical reports in both manual and digital formats.
  • Ensure the security and confidentiality of information encountered or generated during the execution of assigned tasks.
  • Interpret legal descriptions, subdivision plats, Records of Survey, maps, and other survey-related information to facilitate project completion.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned and contribute positively to team efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Understanding of relevant federal, state, and tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Proficiency in the principles, practices, methods, techniques, and instruments used in land surveying, as well as mathematics and physical sciences.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and terminology related to land surveying, including construction methods, engineering plans, specifications, and mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to operate various computer-based resources for surveying tasks, including CAD/CADD, GIS, word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Skill in interpreting and utilizing engineering plans, maps, specifications, and survey field notes.
  • Competence in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational reports.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service to both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to apply training techniques effectively.
  • Analytical skills to assess information, draw logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in a relevant field of study; and two years of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience demonstrating the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

OR

  • Five years of experience in a relevant field.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • A criminal background check is required upon recommendation for hire to assess suitability, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license may be required (no DUIs or major traffic violations within the last three years).
  • Meeting the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements may be necessary to obtain a driver's permit for operating program vehicles.
  • Incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English based on departmental needs as a condition of employment.
