Job Title: Histotechnologist II

University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a skilled Histotechnologist II to join our team in the Anatomical Pathology Department.

Job Summary:

The Histotechnologist II will be responsible for preparing patient tissue samples for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. This includes processing surgical specimens, embedding tissue samples, and preparing quality slides.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Specimen Processing: Load, unload, and program tissue processors to prepare patient tissue samples for examination.
  2. Tissue Embedding: Embed tissue samples according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation.
  3. Slide Preparation: Prepare quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols.
  4. Staining and Quality Control: Perform routine H&E and Special Staining, both automated and manually, and complete microscopic quality control review of slides.
  5. Accomplish Ancillary Tasks: Accurately accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System, perform frozen sections as needed, and maintain laboratory equipment.
  6. Training and Support: Assist in training new team members and students as needed.
Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you must have a strong foundation in histology and laboratory procedures. A minimum of three years of experience working in a laboratory setting is required, with experience as a histotechnician or histology lab assistant preferred.

Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.
