Position Overview:
The employee will operate under the oversight of the Program Medical Director and the Intensivist Team, adhering to established protocols as necessary. Shift assignments may be adjusted based on the directives of the Intensivist Program Director and the team to address evolving patient care requirements. The role involves orchestrating and overseeing the delivery of hospital care for adult patients facing critical or acute illnesses in intensive care medical and surgical units.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with intensivists to develop and assess protocols for managing critical, acute, and long-term medical needs of patients.
- Conducts thorough physical examinations and compiles comprehensive medical histories.
- Orders relevant laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Analyzes and synthesizes data to formulate preliminary diagnoses and treatment plans.
- Delivers medical services and health education to adult and geriatric patients under the guidance of intensivists.
- Executes necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as per approved protocols, which may include securing and evaluating patients' health histories, ordering laboratory and imaging studies, managing prescriptions, and coordinating referrals.
- Documents the processes involved in critical and acute care delivery and related procedures.
- Administers medications and directs nursing staff to provide injections in accordance with state regulations and hospital policies.
- Acts as a patient advocate, coordinating follow-up care and liaising with other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
- Maintains precise and complete medical records promptly.
- Exhibits effective communication skills with patients, families, and visitors.
- Provides educational counseling to enhance patient care and preventive health knowledge.
- Contributes positively to the work environment and the overall team effort within the intensivist service and hospital.
- Supports staff in delivering quality care and promoting favorable health outcomes.
- Encourages a work atmosphere that remains aligned with current research and guidelines in critical and acute care medicine.
- Performs additional responsibilities as required or directed, ensuring completion of assigned patient care duties.
- Demonstrates the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment, including the physical capability to assist patients as needed and work on a computer for extended periods.
- Practices the profession utilizing evidence-based methods, standardized protocols, and effective resource management to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Engages in daily planning and coordination of care with all healthcare team members to ensure maximum quality and efficiency.
- Completes other administrative and clinical tasks related to service delivery as requested by the Intensivist Service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master’s Degree in Nursing with successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner Specialty or Physician Assistant Program recognized by the state.
- Preferred specialty training or certification in Critical/Acute Care or equivalent experience in an Acute/Critical Care Unit.
- Active RN license, APN license, and certification for ACNP or NCCPA certification for PA.
- Current DEA License issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Responsible for maintaining Continuing Education units annually.
- Fundamental Critical Care Support Certification is preferred.
- Experience in a Critical/Acute Care setting within the last two years is preferred.
- Understanding of nurse practitioner or PA principles and techniques in a Critical/Acute care environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a diverse team setting.
- Proficient computer skills for documentation and communication.
- Must successfully complete a period of training and evaluation as established by the Department of Hospitalists/Intensivists Program Director.
