Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Optical Metrology Systems Specialist to join our team at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Ulm, Germany. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and characterizing high-precision laser optical experiments for space applications.

The DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies is a leading research institution focused on developing precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies. Our team works closely with industry partners to bring innovative solutions to market.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement high-precision laser optical experiments for space applications
  • Characterize and document experimental setups
  • Support the development of an iodine-based frequency reference for use on the International Space Station
  • Publish papers and present scientific contributions at conferences and congresses
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A completed scientific university degree (Master's or diploma) in natural sciences (e.g., physics) or engineering (e.g., electrical engineering and mechanical engineering)
  • PhD in experimental physics or engineering sciences desirable
  • Knowledge of CAD and FEM software (SOLIDWORKS, Ansys, or COMSOL)
  • Experience in the development of optical metrology systems and ideally in optical technologies for space applications
  • Very good IT skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Sound knowledge of written and spoken English and German
