POSITION SUMMARY
The Law Enforcement Training Candidate will participate in a comprehensive and structured basic training program designed to meet the State's and Department's essential standards necessary for becoming a certified Police Officer. The candidate will be required to successfully complete a 16-18 week training curriculum at the Police Training Academy, achieving a minimum average of 70%. Upon successful completion of the academy training, the candidate must pass a written examination conducted by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Following the successful completion of the written exam, the candidate may be eligible for an on-the-job field-training program alongside a certified Police Officer. Candidates who are unable to complete the training or do not meet the State or Department's minimum requirements will be considered to have voluntarily resigned from their position.
Compensation during Academy Training: $15.74/hr.
Compensation post-Academy Completion: $20.92/hr.
SUPERVISION: Works under the guidance of a higher-grade employee.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in police academy training focusing on law enforcement techniques.
- Completes on-the-job field training.
- Assists personnel in various operational sections of the Police Department to gain insights into the methods and procedures employed.
- Accompanies designated Police Training Officers in routine law enforcement activities to acquire experience in diverse police operations.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to operate a vehicle safely and in compliance with traffic regulations.
- Ability to comprehend and adhere to the laws and regulations of the Department.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to prepare written documentation.
- Ability to interact courteously and assertively with the public.
- Ability to pass physical strength and agility assessments.
- Ability to meet the mental standards required for the position.
- Commitment to work safely and responsibly.
- Familiarity with firearms is preferred.
- Vision must be correctable to 20/20, with normal color vision and depth perception.
- Normal hearing in both ears.
- No prior felony convictions or serious misdemeanors.
- Possession of good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
- Ability to successfully pass drug screening and physical and psychological evaluations.
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License.
- Passing score on MCOLES Reading/Writing Test.
- Passing score on MCOLES Physical Agility Examination (valid for six months).
- Successful completion of a licensing examination administered by the State post-Academy.
While performing the duties of this position, the candidate is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The candidate is regularly required to stand and walk; occasionally required to run, jump, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The candidate must be able to withstand exposure to various hazards and environmental conditions.
