About the Role:

The YMCA of Long Island is seeking a Water Safety Professional who will maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. The ideal candidate will create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain active surveillance of the pool area to ensure a safe environment for members.
  • Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete related reports as required.
  • Build effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff to provide excellent customer service.
  • Apply knowledge of safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area to maintain a safe environment. Accurately record data as required by the YMCA and/or state Health Department code.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure necessary equipment is available as needed.
  • Inspect the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
  • Conduct chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service training to stay up-to-date on YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 16 years old.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
  • Current Nassau County Lifeguard certificate.
  • Able to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.

Estimated Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. This salary range is based on industry standards for similar roles in the Long Island area. Note that actual salaries may vary based on individual circumstances.
