We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Financial Aid Specialist to join our team at Hinds Community College. As a key member of our Student Financial Services department, you will play a critical role in ensuring that students receive accurate and timely financial aid awards.
Key Responsibilities- Accurately and efficiently process financial aid awards, including federal, state, and institutional aid, as well as aid from other sources.
- Resolve cost of attendance and over-award issues in a timely manner.
- Verify and adjust financial aid awards as required by federal, state, and institutional policies, including Return of Title IV and Satisfactory Academic Progress processing and advising.
- Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of institutional charges to student accounts.
- Resolve billing issues related to tuition, fees, housing, bookstore charges, sponsors, and sponsorships.
- Refund students accurately and in compliance with all federal, state, and institutional policies.
- Record sponsor billing and payments, and post and reconcile daily payments and deposits.
- Monitor student files to prevent inaccurate billing and over-awards due to enrollment changes and/or package adjustments.
- Work collaboratively with the Student Financial Services team to ensure accurate billing and awarding of aid with the highest level of integrity and compliance.
- Communicate with students and staff to educate and advise on account adjustments and their impact on student accounts.
- Mentor and build skills in fellow counselors and peers.
- Attend regular training in customer service and student financial aid to increase understanding for administering student accounts in a professional and effective manner.
- Assist the Director with special projects, reporting, and internal controls as requested.
- Requires a strong working knowledge of higher education federal and state financial aid programs, policy, and procedures, as well as demonstrated administration of regulations governing those programs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel worksheets and formulas.
- Strong organizational, analytical, planning, and communication skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic and demanding environment.
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex assignments with sensitivity to deadlines, priorities, and changing circumstances.
- Demonstrated professional work ethic and positive, problem-solving attitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce sound solutions.
- Associates degree or experience equivalent required, with a minimum of two years in Student Billing or Financial Aid with a focus on compliance; minimum of two years Student Billing or Financial Aid experience required.
- NASFAA Financial Aid credentials preferred and may be considered to supplement education/experience requirements.
