Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

The Emergency Department nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive care to patients before, during, and after treatment. This includes providing physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural support while ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and supplies for all emergency procedures. Cases may vary from minor to critically ill or injured patients. Nurses will be adept at triaging based on the Emergency Nursing Association triage categories and will maintain thorough assessments to evaluate responses to medications and treatments. The Emergency Department nurse must work collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrate flexibility, and efficiently process information to develop care plans that address the urgent needs of patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilizes appropriate assessment and intervention skills in all nursing care interactions.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, team members, and management in a timely manner.
  • Documents care comprehensively and promptly, utilizing computer charting and ordering systems.
  • Employs critical thinking skills and evaluates alternatives.
  • Manages a multitask workload, prioritizing tasks and organizing care for multiple patients.
  • Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Recognizes the impact of illness and hospitalization on patients and families; adapts care for diverse populations and advocates for patient needs.
  • Values teamwork among healthcare providers.
  • Understands personal limits and seeks assistance when necessary.
  • Articulates the scope of practice for self and others, delegates tasks appropriately, and coordinates care within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Incorporates health education into patient care, focusing on health promotion.
  • Assesses patient understanding and barriers to learning, utilizing colleagues as resources when appropriate.
  • Applies knowledge of the patient populations served, providing age-appropriate care and utilizing expected norms in care planning.
  • Integrates technical, psychological, social, intellectual, and physical skills in care delivery.
  • Demonstrates unit-specific competencies required for the assigned role.
  • Maintains competencies in high-risk and low-volume areas.
  • Promotes satisfaction among internal and external customers.
  • Fosters a culture of service excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Adheres to scheduled work hours and complies with attendance policies.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 60 months of employment.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • Registered Nurse license required.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing required.
  • ENPC or PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification must be obtained within 60 months of employment.
