Overview:

The Deputy General Counsel, reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel, is instrumental in providing comprehensive legal guidance to the organization on a wide array of legal matters pertinent to higher education. This includes, but is not limited to, areas such as athletics, employment law, litigation, nonprofit regulations, tax compliance, risk management, intellectual property, contract negotiations, real estate, and student affairs.

The role involves overseeing the daily operations of the Office of General Counsel, managing a team of attorneys, and ensuring the effective delivery of legal services. The Deputy General Counsel will be expected to handle a diverse range of legal issues, prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, and foster a culture of collaboration and excellence within the legal team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the General Counsel in delivering legal advice and strategic insights to university leadership on various legal matters affecting the institution.
  • Provide guidance on policy and procedural adjustments in line with current legal standards and assist in drafting and reviewing institutional policies.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the legal office, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives while maintaining team cohesion.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships across various departments and administrative units.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, contracts, and memoranda as required.
  • Adopt a proactive approach to identifying potential legal challenges and developing effective solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the legal department's objectives.
Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school is required.
  • Must hold a valid license to practice law in New York State.
  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in a law firm, in-house counsel, or within a higher education context, with a focus on complex legal issues.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to establish trust with senior leadership and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the higher education sector is highly desirable.
