Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to join our team at the City of Flint, MI. As a Fleet Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing skilled work in the repair and maintenance of varied types of trucks, heavy equipment, and accessories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of troubleshooting diagnostics and preventative maintenance (PMs) repairs.
  • Maintain a variety of light and heavy-duty trucks, heavy construction equipment, automobiles, their accessories, and other equipment such as air compressors, mowers, and spray equipment.
  • Perform major repairs on gasoline and diesel engines; transmissions; differentials; drive units; brakes; suspension systems; cooling systems; fuel systems; instrumentation; electrical systems; hydraulic systems; accessory power equipment.
  • Repair and alter equipment using welding and cutting equipment.
  • Instruct Fleet Mechanic Helper in the repair and maintenance of trucks, heavy construction equipment, their components, other equipment, and automobiles.
  • Record time on work records, requisition parts, and recommend the ordering of parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Perform emergency road service and related field repairs.
  • Clean surfaces such as metal, wood, and glass for spray and letter painting, paints, stripes, and letters construction and automotive equipment.
Requirements
  • Minimum of (1) year of full-time, experience performing heavy equipment and mechanical repairs OR an Associate degree (or an equivalent number of coursework hours) in Automotive Technology and two (2) years of experience as a Mechanic.
  • Considerable knowledge of the design, operation, and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, hydraulic systems, and accessory power equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and ability to determine parts and adjustments necessary to put equipment into proper operating condition.
  • Ability to meet physical, visual, and mental standards of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety of oneself, other persons, and equipment.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan CDL with class B endorsement OR to obtain within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Certification as a Specialty Mechanic in at least 2 of the first 6 categories of heavy-duty truck repair as defined by the State of Michigan (Categories include Engine Repair-Gasoline, Engine Repair-Diesel, Drive Train, Brakes & Braking Systems, Suspension & Steering Systems, and Electrical Systems.) OR equivalent qualification/certification in a branch of the United States Military Service (copy of DD-214 must be provided as proof of qualification).
  • Possession of basic hand tools as defined by the agreement between City of Flint and Local 1600 AFSCME.
  • Ability and willingness to continue to pursue additional State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Repair Specialty Certifications to become a State of Michigan Certified Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic II.
