Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Histology Technician to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. The successful candidate will provide technical and clinical support for various physicians and sub-specialists by performing histology-related laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with various health conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under the directorship of the Mohs surgeon, perform frozen tissue preparations for microscopic examination.
  • Properly identify and orient tissue.
  • Use Mohs frozen section technique to orient, map, freeze, cut, and stain frozen tissue sections.
  • Recognize adequacy of cryosectioning.
  • Label specimens as appropriate.
  • Operate automated instrumentation to stain microscopic slides.
  • Evaluate stains microscopically for acceptable results.
  • Identify and correct staining deficiencies.
  • Perform manual methods during instrument downtimes.
  • Recognize, resolve, and document unacceptable staining and coverslipping results and/or instrument failure.
  • Maintain logbook of Mohs specimens as well as other manual and electronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary.
  • Record all documentation consistently and legibly in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Responsible for maintaining Quality Control and Quality Assurance documentation to assure compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Prioritize technical workload based on assignment or established priorities, respond effectively to changes in workflow adjusting work to incorporate STAT requests or fluctuations in work volume.
  • Clean, disinfect, perform, and document routine equipment and instrument per SOP.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory to ensure supply levels are appropriate and adequate.
  • Notify coordinator promptly of any supply issues.
  • Foster department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication.
  • Participate in Safety and Infection Control activities.
  • Follow all required safety procedures, assume a proactive role in laboratory safety.
  • Assist in cleaning, wrapping, and sterilization of instruments.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of clinical supplies.
  • Assist in clerical duties such as scanning of patients' records into EMR.
  • Take initiative for personal development by attending teleconferences, educational sessions, and required meetings, etc.
  • Possess motivation, self-reliance, initiative, a team player.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
