Coder III

The Coder III is a certified professional responsible for Inpatient coding at San Antonio Regional Hospital. This role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in assigning appropriate codes for Inpatients.

• Review patient records, including electronic records, to assign accurate codes
• Ensure coding is complete, timely, and in accordance with CMS, Coding Clinic Guidelines, CPT Assistant, and organizational policies and procedures
• Work with Observation, Outpatient Surgeries, Cardiac Catheterizations, Interventional Radiology, and outpatients as assigned

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Completion of AHIMA or AAPC approved coding program leading to certification as CCS or CPC
• Three years coding experience in an acute care facility using ICD-10-CM, CPT coding, and APC grouper required
• Clinical practice experience desirable and may be counted toward 2 years of coding experience

• Data Entry proficiency with 3M, APR, DRG software
• Knowledge of MS-DRG methodology, severity of illness, and risk of mortality methodology and PCS coding
• Medical terminology (basic and advanced)
• Human anatomy and physiology, pathology, and microbiology required
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM & CPT 4
• Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures
• Ability to interpret medical record documentation for accuracy and completeness

Current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Certificate required

Proficient in use of computers

Must be able to perform the essential physical requirements of the job
