Position Overview:
Under general oversight, the Pharmaceutical Care Specialist manages the supervisory, distributive, and clinical operations of the Pharmacy. This includes the timely and precise review, processing, verification, and monitoring of physician orders, patient medication records, and completed prescriptions. The role also involves conducting routine daily rounds on designated nursing units.
Accurate drug information, recommendations, and interventions are promptly communicated to physicians, healthcare professionals, and patients. The Specialist assists the Director and Assistant Director of Pharmacy in their responsibilities to optimize departmental performance and to adapt and enhance services in response to the evolving needs of the department, the healthcare facility, and the community.
Assigned projects are conducted, performed, and presented to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and any other relevant committees as deemed necessary. Responsibilities delegated by the Director or Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services are executed accurately and in a timely manner.
Experience and Qualifications: Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting is preferred. The Specialist maintains a suitable level of competency by completing a minimum of 15 Continuing Education (CE) credit hours annually, including 6 CE live credit hours.
Educational Background: A graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy is preferred. The Specialist ensures ongoing competency through the completion of at least 15 continuing education (CE) credit hours each licensing year, including 6 CE live credit hours.
Essential Skills: Ability to work under direct or minimal supervision and manage stress effectively. Strong collaborative skills to work alongside health-system and pharmacy staff. Capacity to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to variations in workload and work schedule. Proficiency in prioritizing tasks, making decisions, and responding swiftly to urgent requests. Capability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
Strong communication, supervisory, organizational, learning, and minimal teaching skills are crucial for the effective execution of assigned duties.
Physical Requirements: Light-Medium
While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, and walk; utilize hands and fingers; and communicate effectively. The employee must exert 15 to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 5 to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Normal hearing and vision ranges are required to perform work and communicate effectively. Other demands include sustained concentration, equipment operation, and listening to low levels of noise. Generally, this role is performed in a well-lit, well-ventilated, heated, and air-conditioned environment under secure working conditions.
