About the Role

The Indiana Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Scoping Engineer to join our team in the Technical Services Division. As a Scoping Engineer, you will play a critical role in the planning and development of transportation infrastructure projects, ensuring that they are safe, efficient, and meet the needs of the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Development: Assist in the development of project proposals, research, and planning processes to ensure that projects are well-defined and meet the agency's performance standards.
  • Program Management: Coordinate programs and plans for the division, interpreting laws, regulations, and guidelines within the area of specialization, and reviewing program plans for completeness, economic, and technical feasibility.
  • Design and Research: Assist in the development of programs, research, and technology plans to improve product quality, reviewing research proposals and reports to ensure their accuracy, effectiveness, and potential for implementation.
  • Inspection and Quality Control: Organize, conduct, and review engineering investigations, field observations, and quality control/quality assurance programs to ensure policy and best practices are actively deployed.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred but not required) from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.
  • License: Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required; exception may be made for individuals with a bachelors degree in engineering or a bachelors degree in engineering and an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana in a lower-level classification.
  • Experience: At least four(4) years of experience in engineering (civil engineering is preferred), transportation research, or related area.
  • Skills: Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures to the engineering specialty, as well as broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features.
