Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse Substitute to join our team at Burke County Public Schools. As a School Nurse Substitute, you will play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of our students.

Responsibilities
  • Administer medications and provide first aid as needed
  • Conduct screenings for lice and counsel students and parents on treatment
  • Administer or assist with any treatment needed by students, including catheterizations, suctioning, tube feedings, and nebulizers
  • Check blood pressures and temperatures of staff and students as needed
  • Counsel students on medical issues, problems at home, illness, and death
  • Referrals made to counselors as needed
  • Maintain infection control procedures
  • Follow up with injured or ill students by phone
  • Screen students checking out due to illness or injury
  • Maintain health records and immunization compliance
  • Maintain secure storage of all medications
  • Maintain accurate logs of medication given and students seen daily
  • Obtain and keep records of parental consent to administer medication
  • Call parents as needed
  • Maintain adequate supplies used in the clinic
  • Fill out accident reports
  • Maintain a clean environment in the clinic
  • Report to the principal any medical situations that might affect the student body
  • Maintain files with emergency contact numbers for each student
  • Send home current information concerning students, such as lice outbreaks, strep throat, and mononucleosis
  • Provide in-services to staff as requested
  • Keep teachers informed on medical problems relating to students in their class
  • Maintain current CPR and First Aid training
  • Read current nursing and medical journals
  • Read school news health letters and review guidelines for school nurses
  • Attend in-service meetings for nurses
  • Remain active in GASN (GA Association of Nurses)
  • Take part in Career Day at school
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with appropriate governmental agencies
  • Communicate effectively with the public, staff members, students, parents, administrators, and other contact persons using tact and good judgment
  • Follow attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules
  • Ensure adherence to good safety standards
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards
  • Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities
  • Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives
  • Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment
  • Keep the supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner
  • Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member
  • Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement
  • Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records
  • Participate in cross-training activities as required
  • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position
Requirements
  • Certified/Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse
  • Three (3) years minimum successful pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification
Working Conditions

The School Nurse Substitute will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. The ability to multitask and prioritize tasks is essential. The School Nurse Substitute will be required to work in a variety of settings, including classrooms, clinics, and offices.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position will be paid consistent with the System's salary schedule. The length of work year and hours of employment will be established by the System.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the principal.
