Job Overview

Position Title: Equipment Operator

Department: Facilities Maintenance

Classification: Non-Exempt

Compensation: Starting at $16.66 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the operation of various machinery and tools to support construction and maintenance initiatives within the facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilizes a boom mower or tractor equipped with a bush-hog for mowing and clearing land.
  • Operates backhoes, trackhoes, and mini-excavators for excavation tasks.
  • Employs hand and power tools for land clearing, limb cutting, and brush removal.
  • Collects and disposes of debris.
  • Installs, maintains, and cleans culverts.
  • Repairs potholes as needed.
  • Conducts traffic control and flagging operations.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment, including greasing and blade changes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes other tasks as assigned by management.
  • In emergency situations, all employees may be required to perform alternative duties.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks effectively.
  • Competence in using hand and power tools.

SUPERVISION

Work is assigned by a supervisor who provides general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for adherence to procedures and accuracy.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include traffic regulations, safety protocols, and departmental policies. While generally clear, some guidelines may require interpretation.

WORK COMPLEXITY

  • The role involves various equipment operation tasks, with complexity arising from adverse weather conditions and heavy traffic.
  • The primary objective is to operate equipment to support departmental functions, contributing to the maintenance of safe and efficient county infrastructure.

CONTACTS

  • Interactions are primarily with colleagues and the public.
  • Contact is typically for information exchange, problem resolution, and service provision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in various positions, including sitting, standing, bending, and crouching. The role requires lifting both light and heavy objects, climbing, and using tools with precision.
  • Work is predominantly outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery is common, necessitating the use of protective equipment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations at a high school level or equivalent.
  • Experience sufficient to understand the fundamental principles related to the primary duties of the position, typically acquired through an apprenticeship or similar role.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license for the operation of vehicles or equipment.
