ROLE OBJECTIVES:

Police officers are tasked with the effective execution of essential duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations, and directives. Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, general law enforcement duties crucial for maintaining community safety and order. The police officer role is non-supervisory and operates on a designated shift under the general oversight of the Division Commander, Sergeant, or Corporal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Comprehensive understanding of departmental rules and regulations; in-depth knowledge of accepted principles, practices, and procedures of law enforcement; strong familiarity with departmental policies, procedures, general orders, and memoranda; thorough awareness of relevant state laws, municipal ordinances, and judicial rulings; solid understanding of the municipality's geography and significant landmarks; ability to interact with the public in a courteous yet assertive manner to foster and maintain positive community relations; capacity to assess complex law enforcement issues and situations, adopting prompt, effective, and reasonable responses; proficiency in the use of firearms.

Lateral Police Officers:

  • Must have previously held a valid certification from the Maryland Police Training Commission or be eligible for certification following completion of comparative compliance training.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Detect criminal offenders and unlawful activities, and when necessary, apprehend suspects and engage in subsequent judicial processes;
  • Minimize opportunities for criminal activity through proactive patrol and other preventative measures;
  • Assist individuals in imminent danger of physical harm;
  • Manage the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic;
  • Identify potential serious law enforcement or governmental issues;
  • Foster a sense of security within the community;
  • Uphold and maintain public peace;
  • Provide additional emergency services as required.
