Job Summary

As the Instrumentation & Controls Manager at Tesla, you will lead a team of engineers and technicians responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning complex instrumentation and control systems. Your role will involve managing projects from inception to completion, ensuring that systems meet quality standards and operational requirements. You will work closely with other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and performance of control systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design & Programming: Oversee the design and development of instrumentation and control systems, including the development and implementation of control system programming, ensuring design and programming adhere to industry standards, safety regulations, and client specifications.
  • Construction & Implementation: Manage the construction and installation of instrumentation and control systems, ensuring timely delivery and within-budget completion, responsible for coordinating with contractors, vendors, and internal teams to facilitate smooth project execution.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and enforce quality control procedures to ensure the integrity and reliability of instrumentation and control systems, responsible for the development and maintenance of documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and operation manuals, accountable to addressing and resolving any quality issues or deficiencies promptly.
  • Commissioning & Start-Up: Oversee the commissioning and start-up of instrumentation and control systems, ensuring proper functionality and performance, as well as conduct system testing, troubleshooting, and adjustments to meet project requirements. Provide training and support to operational staff on system use and maintenance.
  • Leadership & Management: Lead and mentor a team of instrumentation and controls engineers and technicians, responsible for planning, assigning, and reviewing work to ensure team goals and project deadlines are met. Foster a collaborative and safety-conscious work environment.
  • Budget & Resource Management: Develop and manage project budgets, including cost estimates, expenditures, and resource allocation, as well as optimize resource utilization to achieve project objectives within budget constraints.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all activities comply with relevant regulations, codes, and safety standards, as well as promote and enforce safety practices and procedures within the team and on project sites as the highest priority.
Requirements
  • Degree in Control Systems Engineering or a related field; advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • At least 15 years of experience on large commercial or industrial construction, including experience in management of design, programming, commissioning, and construction of complex I&C systems, coordinating with contractors and vendors. Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Mastery of estimating, plans reading, document control, with the ability to read, interpret, and manage changes to Mechanical & Electrical Systems and manage changes to Sequence of Operations. Expert knowledge of PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and related instrumentation technologies.
  • Exceptional people management, team management, and leadership skills and experience. Tesla employees are highly motivated and driven. The ideal manager will help support career growth, manage the team with clear goals and feedback.

  • The highest level of interpersonal skills, which involve being able to communicate efficiently with multiple people regarding your proposed plans and/or ideas on an execution strategy. Expert communication skills, which show that you can relay your thoughts, opinions, and ideas clearly to those around you. This may include creating maps or PowerPoint presentations.
